Like Nick Cave, Linton Kwesi Johnson is a hugely respected musician, although it’s his poetry, often recited as verse over his music, for which he’s most widely known. It’s rare to spot an author at another author’s event, apart from myself of course, so I slap my head, convinced I’ve got my dates wrong.

FP: I was supposed to come for the James Kelman talk.

Linton Kwesi Johnson: It’s alright. Jim’s inside.

FP: Jim?

A decent-sized crowd are milling around eating crisps and drinking wine out of clear plastic cups. Unlike most author events I’ve attended, everyone seems to know everyone else. New arrivals, such as myself, are still greeted warmly and welcomed, as if we’ve been expected. The shop itself specialises in black culture. It’s small and there’s little space to hide.

Older Woman: Do you know Jim?

FP: Jim?

Older Woman: Yes, Jim. It’s his book launch tonight…

FP: I thought it was James Kelman’s…

Older Woman: Yes.

FP: Oh, James is Jim. Right. Yes, yes I do know him.

Older Woman: How do you know him?

FP: Oh, well I don’t actually know him. I mean… he scares me, if I’m honest.

Older Woman: He scares you?

FP: Yes. Does he scare you?

Older Woman: He scares you! [Laughs and laughs and laughs.]
